The Rewind Technique

A Non Invasive Way To Deal With Trauma

The effects of trauma can be detrimental in many ways and sufferers can experience nightmares, hallucinations/voices, flashbacks, rumination and involuntary recalling or reliving of the event/s; these may lead to depression, anxiety, anger, violence, domestic abuse, marital breakdown, and loss of a job, school exclusion, and loss of friends, family, self-esteem and self-worth.

There are many sufferers who are unable to live a fulfilling life following a traumatic event.

If this is you, The Rewind can help you get your life back.

The Rewind is specially created to treat post-traumatic stress disorder although it can be used to alleviate the involuntary recall of any traumatic event/s by filing away the traumatic event so it becomes under control, the memory is still there if the client wishes to access it although recall will now be voluntary.

Examples of traumas may be;

Sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic abuse, rape, bullying, being held at gun or knifepoint, car crashes and near misses, surviving floods and other natural disasters, pathological grief (partner killed or dies in terrible, preventable situations) obstetric traumas, burglary, robbery, surgical mistakes, vicarious trauma, witnessing a death or suicide, stalking, recurring images of partners infidelity, veterans, survivors of genocide, refugees...and many more.

Any event which has negative emotions attached to it can be considered a trauma and  provoke negative effects which impact the quality of life.

Closure without disclosure

The benefits of non-disclosure include:

  • Minimizing the risk of the client being re-traumatized.

  • There is no fear of disclosing sensitive information e.g. In the case of servicemen, for example, about deployment.

  • For survivors of rape and sexual abuse, the benefit of not having to disclose details of the event to a stranger.

The Rewind for Depression / Anxiety

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services which provide evidence-based psychological therapies to people with anxiety disorders and depression reached out to one million people but managed to only successfully to treat half. Cardiff university admits that current treatments of CBT and EMDR at best achieve a 48% success rate whereas The Rewind Technique has been shown to achieve more than 90% success.

Many of the causes of depression and anxiety may actually be caused by a traumatic event, recent or historical but which often are not recognised as related to the symptoms you are experiencing because health practitioners do not always enquire about a traumatic cause and you yourself may not make the link especially if it was something that happened a long time ago.

The History

The Rewind Technique was first introduced into the literature of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by Dr. David Muss (founder of  IARTT - International Association for Rewind Trauma Therapy ) back in 1991; ** "A new technique for treating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder". British Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1991, 30,91-92.

19 policeman with PTSD were treated with The Rewind Technique and followed for two years, all reported being well, returned to work and there wasn't a single relapse

The Rewind Technique works equally well for adults, young people and children as long as they are able to recall the traumatic event.

How many sessions will you need?

For a single traumatic event, it is usual for 2 – 3 sessions to be required.

For multiple traumas like; domestic violence, sexual abuse, combat, repeated violent attacks etc., each traumatic event can be dealt with on separate sessions, sometimes it is possible to deal with them in 1 session depending on how the involuntary recall represents, although be prepared for it to take 2 or more sessions, usually no more than 6.

We also offer Therapeutic Counselling/ Coaching sessions following on from The Rewind if felt beneficial as sometimes living without the trauma or facing the after-effects left from when you were suffering from trauma symptoms may bring up issues that require a little support.

All sessions are provided by a qualified therapeutic counsellor, your first session will assess your trauma impact level by completing the impact of events score questionnaire (there is a simpler version offered for children), your score will be re-assessed at the beginning of each session.

You will not be asked to disclose any of the details of your trauma as this is not required for the Rewind to take place or be successful.

The session is booked for 60 minutes although it may take less time.

How much will it cost?
