Frequently Asked Questions - Counselling/Therapy

Who do we work with?

We work with Adults, Young People & Children Aged 7 years and up

Confidentiality and Safety

We take your confidentiality and safety very seriously, this will be discussed with you and/or your child at the first meeting

 What is Creative Therapy?

Creative therapy may include the use of various props, symbols and activities, creative art, creative writing, role play, sand-play, games and therapeutic storytelling which can be chosen by the client to help them express and explore whatever is going on for them; childhood experiences, past trauma, internal conflicts, thoughts, feelings and anxieties.

The use of creativity allows the mind to release things blocked by our brain's protection system. Being creative takes away the embarrassment of directly talking about sensitive issues, a picture can say many things that can't be said out with words. Art can highlight emotions and internal conflicts, it can be healing and help the creator find resolutions.

Creativity can ease anxiety, it can be calming, it can provide the space to allow the mind to focus in order to process and make sense of things.

How do I know that counselling and play therapy will be right for me or my child?

Everyone is different, however, we always aim to make you and your child feel comfortable and in control of their therapy experience.

Creative approaches alongside traditional talking therapy offer different ways to express and explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences so, there is a very good chance that you or your child will experience some improvements.

Some people may find it is easier to access support on the telephone or online; these sessions are available to adults, and children over 11

Why not have a free 30-minute initial telephone consultation to see what works for you or your child?

What are the differences between telephone / online counselling and face-to-face counselling?

Both telephone, online, and face-to-face sessions adhere to the same confidentiality and safeguarding guidelines.

Telephone and Online sessions are held weekly in a regular time slot in the same way as face-to-face sessions, the main difference being you choose the location you'll have your sessions from and you will be in charge of managing your environment and privacy.

There will be a mutually agreed contract at the beginning of the work together.

There is a limit to the amount of creative work we can do although there are some activities you may be able to carry out while in session on the telephone, the main difference being the therapist may not be able to see fully or at all what you are doing.

Telephone and Online sessions are charged at the same rate as face-to-face sessions.

What are the differences between Counselling and Coaching Sessions?

Both Coaching and Counselling sessions adhere to the same confidentiality and safeguarding guidelines.

Although a therapeutic element is involved in both the Counselling and the Coaching techniques we use and there will be a mutually agreed contract at the beginning of the work together with both modalities there are other differences between the processes;

Counselling works mainly with the conscious mind and often involves exploring issues verbally unless creative methods are used when there is more of an unconscious element to the work. Counselling sessions usually last for 60-90 minutes Counselling is usually a longer process although this does depend on the issue/s to be resolved.

The Coaching method we use works mainly with the unconscious mind although there are conscious aspects to the work too including tasks to be carried out away from sessions. Sessions are equally beneficial whether carried out in person or online although because of the non-invasive process where the client doesn't have to share intimate details of their experiences during coaching this means it may work better online than Counselling. The Coaching process tends to be shorter than Counselling as working with the unconscious mind allows us to go deeper more quickly.

For adults, we generally offer a 12-week program for Coaching rather than individual sessions as we have found it works well to have a container to really focus on the client's needs and have 90-120 minutes per week working together as well as other additional benefits in the program.

How many sessions will be needed?

For a client to feel safe and comfortable to explore their issues they will need to build a  therapeutic relationship with their therapist, this may take some time or it can happen quickly, it will depend on the individual, their attachment style, their life experiences and their ability to trust as to how long it will take.

Therapy is an ongoing process where the presenting issue may open up underlying deeper rooted issues that may take time to work through. There will always be opportunities to review the work throughout therapy.

For children and young people, we strongly recommend a minimum of 12 sessions

Foe The Rewind Technique and Coaching packages, the number of sessions will vary although is usually less than in counselling, this will be discussed in the initial consultation.
